receding gumsHave you been trying to figure out ways of improving your smile? One option you may want to consider is a procedure called crown lengthening. It gives you a more brilliant smile by removing any excess gum tissue that is covering your teeth. This makes your teeth look bigger, and that makes your smile look bigger. It is a simple procedure that is done for both cosmetic and restorative reasons, but if you want that bigger, brighter smile, it may be one to consider for you.

Benefits of Getting Crown Lengthening

There are quite a few benefits of crown lengthening. However, the two main ones are giving you longer crowns visually, and allowing you to have restoration work done if it is necessary. The cosmetic benefit is the fact that you have longer looking teeth, which makes your smile bigger and more attractive. However, if you need restorative work, this is a great procedure for that as well. In order to do a restoration, we need at least 2mm of healthy tooth enamel to affix your restoration. If you had a tooth break off at the gum line, for example, this is not always the case. That is when we would go below the gum line to get to the remaining healthy tooth. Then, we can affix your restoration to that part of the tooth, restoring the look and function or your original tooth.

What is the Crown Lengthening Procedure Like?

The procedure is typically painless, and the discomfort during recovery is typically minimal. We make sure to numb up any area we will be working on, so you do not feel any pain. We then remove the excess gum tissue you want removed. This can be done on every tooth in your mouth, or just one or two teeth. The results you seek will determine how many teeth we trim the gum tissue on. While we are trimming the gum tissue, we also make adjustments to the underlying bone so that your teeth appear more balanced and stay held in place firmly. That way, as your mouth heals, your smile becomes even more beautiful than your initial results dictate. Healing does not take too long, and you should be able to return to work the day after having the procedure done. It is an easy way to help improve the look of your smile.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from Crown Lengthening?

The nice thing about having crown lengthening done is that the recovery is quite short. For the first 24 hours, you must be gentle around the areas where we worked. Then, you need to eat softer foods for about two more days. After that, your gums should be feeling back to normal within 1-2 weeks. That’s it! You can go back to eating and drinking like normal that quickly. During the recovery time, you must make sure to follow the post-procedure instructions we send home with you, but they are simple. The most important thing you need to remember is to always practice good oral hygiene and keep the areas clean. If you can do that, you are well on your way to having the great results you wanted!
